Cleveland Police Department under investigation for delayed response to brutal assault and murder of Carly Capek

Cleveland Police Department’s delayed response to the brutal assault and murder of Carly Capek under investigation.

On September 6, 2022, Carly Capek was brutally assaulted and murdered in her home on West 78th Street in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. Carly, a mother of four, was heard screaming in her home, prompting neighbors to call emergency services.

The calls originated as a priority 1 felonious assault; however, neighbors report that it took approximately 30 minutes for police to arrive. Emergency Medical Services arrived, but were unable to provide medical assistance without police presence. When police arrived, the patrol car did not have lights or sirens on and the officers sat outside of the house for a few minutes before entering.

Friedman, Gilbert + Gerhardstein is representing the family of Carly Capek, requesting a transparent investigation into the delayed response. The Cleveland Police Department has yet to comment.

Just to lose a daughter from a brutal murder is difficult enough to deal with, but the idea that the police department, which is supposed to protect people, failed to arrive has just compounded that grief, trauma and distress that they have suffered ever since this happened.
